It’s comforting to know that we haven’t decimated all the wildlife – yesterday I found moose tracks of a cow and calf just above the house. They were on a mission, but not in a hurry, based on the distance between prints. In a full out run the individual prints can be up to twelve feet apart for a big bull. These were about 3 feet for the cow, indicating that she was just walking. I found where they came out and followed them to my neighbor’s property. They were heading south and downhill, so maybe they’re sick of the snow too!

This picture isn’t of the mother and calf that were on my place, but taken in an undisclosed location somewhere in Ontario. Hopefully, some (insert city name here) commando doesn’t decide he needs the white pelt more than the moose!

What a cool colour for a moose! I've only ever seen the usual dark brown variety. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Nancy, glad you could drop by! I suspect this moose is an albino, but it's hard to tell without seeing the eyes, which would be red. Albinism is the total lack of colouration, making it quite likely that the animal would be susceptible to cancer. If it's simply a case of a white coat, it's very rare, and I can imagine that the first native people would be astonished and take it as an omen.
Good Grief! I flipped when I spotted a stoat in a friends garden but that's nothing compared to a moose.
Hi Frankie, thanks for visiting! I'm so glad I have the opportunity of seeing animals in my garden, although I wouldn't want a moose to get inside my fence - they can do a lot of damage to any kind of tree, not because they eat them but because they like to rub their bellies on them! One nursery I worked for in the Peace Country around Dawson Creek, B.C. lost most of a shipment of fruit trees destined for sale to just that. The funniest episode I ever had with a moose was seeing a young one down on it's knees eating a bale of alfalfa hay that I had for dogs to sleep on. When the dogs spotted it and went outside, the moose almost fell over getting up and running off. I couldn't help laughing, even while I felt sorry for it! Moose don't graze like sheep or deer, they browse on things that are at nose level, not on the ground.
